The Best of Onion Soup Recipes
For Current Flu Virus

Before I give you my onion soup recipe, which is excellent for the current flu virus, here are some interesting facts concerning onions.

  • Onions are characterized by their rich content of thiosulfinates, sulfides, sulfoxides, and other odoriferous sulfur compounds
  • They were used and still are to treat colds, coughs, and asthma and the Chinese used onions to treat angina, coughs, bacterial infections, and breathing problems.
  • The fructo-oligosaccharides of the onion suppresses the growth of potentially harmful bacteria in the colon, and can reduce the risk of tumors developing in the colon.
  • Onions are also a rich source of flavonoids, which provide protection against cardiovascular disease.
  • Onion extracts, rich in a variety of sulfides, provide some protection against tumor growth.

Due to the fact that the Chinese have the highest intake of onions, garlic, and other Allium vegetables, their risk of stomach cancer is 40 percent lower than those with the lowest intake.

Elderly Dutch men and women with the highest onion consumption (at least one-half onion/day) have one-half the level of stomach cancer compared with those consuming no onions at all. (taken from healing benefits of onions

Besides adding taste to foods, the antibacterial and antiseptic properties of onions can be used to heal people from:

  • colds
  • bacterial infections
  • tumor growth
  • angina
  • (swine)flu
  • fever
  • pneumonia

Some Interesting Stories Concerning The Healing Effects of Onions for Current Flu Virus

(You can chose to believe these stories or not.)

The doctor came upon this one farmer during the 1919 flu epidemic which killed 40 million people, and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different, the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home.

The doctor couldn't believe it and asked to have one of the onions to place it under the microscope. He did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Here is another healing onion story about a child sick with fever.

Healing Fever

This child was in the hospital and near dying. His Italian/African grandmother came to the hospital and told a family member to go buy her a large onion and a new pair of white cotton socks.

She sliced the onion open then put a slice on the bottom of each of his feet and put the white cotton socks on him. In the morning when he awoke they removed the socks. The slices of onion were black and his fever was gone.

I can relate to this story because when I was young, my mother used to put crushed onions mixed with oil on the bottoms of my feet, covering them with my socks when I was sick with flu, fevers or colds. She also made me eat lots of crushed garlic placed in my food. (I was definitely not very popular at that time.) My mother was Ukrainian and believed in the healing power of herbs and onions.

The following story that someone sent to me might have some truth in it and I have already placed onions in the rooms in my home. It concerns healing someone who contacted pneumonia:

She came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion, place one end on a fork and place the forked end into an empty jar. Then at night, place the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs. In her case, it happened just like that, in the morning the onion was a mess and she began to feel better.

It is said that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago because of their powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

My Mother's Onion Soup Recipe

Fill a large pot with water, using at least 4 liters of water.

  • soup bone, or I like to use skinless chicken legs or breast
  • couple of Bay Leaves
  • 3 to 4 cloves of mashed garlic
  • dice 10 onions
  • dice 4 stalks of celery In my onion soup recipe, I use lots of herbs. If I don't have certain herbs, I substitute others. Be creative!
  • 1 tablespoon of paprika
  • 1 tablespoon of pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of mixed herbs - marjoram, oregano, thyme and basil
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of ginger (you can use whole ginger or juice it and use 1 tablespoon of the juice)

Let this boil slowly for a few hours. Take out the chicken, which will be delicious, and add a gravy mix (2 tablespoons with cold water). Let it simmer for a few more minutes. Serve with fresh parsley or basil leaves. Hmmmmmmm...I can taste it.

Oh, one more thing, it is probably a Ukrainian thing, but I add sour cream to my home-made onion soup recipe. This onion soup recipe is excellent for cleansing your digestive system.
