What Does Inflammation Mean?

What does inflammation mean?  It occurs when cells of the body are attacked by foreign aggression. In other words it is a defensive reaction of your immune system in your cell tissues towards viruses, bacteria, fungus and parasites which can cause disease in the human body, plant or animal.

Your immune system helps the body to overcome the attackers such as viruses and bacteria plus other invaders.

What Is Inflammation and Why It is Important

It also helps:

  • the body to repair damaged tissue and regeneration after injury. 
  • it is necessary for our survival mechanism.

But, if it turns against us, it can be the main cause of many diseases. An underactive immune system can cause inflammation.

When the Immune system becomes compromised, there’s a kind of warning signal emitted by certain transmitters, prostaglandins, histamine and other messengers which trigger the immediate reactions of inflammation.

This includes a dilation of blood vessels, which is a massive injection of white blood cells that cause the familiar rashes and allergies. But in a restorative purpose, histamine will also activate other categories of white blood cells, lymphocytes and macrophages.

What Does Inflammation Mean When It Progresses to Chronic Inflammation

Studies have been done to show the harm done to the body by chronic inflammation  in:

  • joint disease

  • the arteries which can cause heart attacks and strokes
  • the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease by destroying nerve cells 
  • the development of cancer and type II diabetes and
  • the immune system, it can depress the immune system.

Generally all pain can be attributed to inflammation. When tissue becomes swollen and painful, inflammation occurs and it's necessary to act accordingly.
